May/August 2001 | NW REPORT StoriesFrom Northwest Classrooms By Jennifer Stepanek Northwest Teacher, a journal about math and science teaching, was launched last year as a forum for sharing stories and ideas, taking a look at timely issues and best practices from real-life classrooms. The journal is published three times a year, and each edition focuses on a key topic in mathematics and science instruction.
"The journal seeks to inform and inspire teachers and administrators who value the importance of mathematics and science teaching," says Denise Jarrett Weeks, who led the development of the journal for NWREL's Northwest Eisenhower Regional Consortium for Mathematics and Science. "The feature articles are written to be both engaging and researched-based, highlighting classrooms from around the Northwest."The current issue, "In an Era of Reform: Standards and the Classroom," takes a look at the progress of mathematics and science standards in schools, highlighting the issues and challenges that teachers are grappling with in their quest to put standards into practice. Future issues will focus on lesson study, a professional development approach that is widely used in Japan, and taking science inquiry outdoors. The Consortium created Northwest Teacher to serve as a tool for professional development. The stories are selected to inspire teachers to think and talk about their own experiences and beliefs. Each story is accompanied by a sidebar to help extend the ideas and questions raised in the article. The journal can serve as a starting point for group dialogue about issues in mathematics and science teaching, as well as for independent reading and personal reflection.
According to Kit Peixotto, Consortium Director, "The title of this journal, Northwest Teacher, reflects our program's approach to improving mathematics and science education: recognizing that teachers are the ones who make it happen."Single copies are available free of charge, while supplies last, to educators in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. To request a single copy, contact the Center by e-mail: math_and_science@nwrel.org; by telephone: (503) 275-9500; or visit the Center's Web site to order a copy or to download the online version of the journal: www.nwrel.org/msec/nwteacher/index.html. If you are outside the Northwest region, or if you'd like to order multiple copies, you can purchase the journal through NWREL's Document Reproduction Service. See the Document Order Form.
