Posters Feature the
Best Methods
for Improving Schools

Two new posters from NWREL's Comprehensive Center highlight some of the most effective practices for school improvement that have been identified by research. The color posters are 12 x 18 inches and list key features of effective schooling.

The 15 Schooling Practices That Matter MostThe poster, "The 15 Schooling Practices That Matter Most," features contextual as well as instructional attributes of exemplary teaching. These attributes include safe and orderly school environment, small class size, and effective questioning techniques.

This poster is based on a publication by NWREL researcher Kathleen Cotton: The Schooling Practices That Matter Most. The 36-page booklet, published by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, has received positive reviews from numerous education publications. (The booklet can be ordered from the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, 1703 N. Beauregard St., Alexandria, Virginia 22311-1714, phone: (800) 933-2723; Web site: shop.ascd.org/ProductDisplay.cfm?ProductID=300212.)

Components of Comprehensive Reform School ProgramsThe other poster, "Components of Comprehensive Reform School Programs," highlights nine components of school reform that are most likely to create meaningful and lasting change. Schools must address these nine components to qualify for funding from the U.S. Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration program. CSRD is a program administered by the U.S. Department of Education that awards three-year grants to schools implementing comprehensive school reform. (For more information, go to the CSRD Web site at www.ed.gov/offices/OESE/compreform/.)

One each of the posters is available free to educators in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington, and can be requested by phoning Bracken Reed, (503) 275-9481. Others may purchase the posters from NWREL's Document Reproduction Service. See the Document Order Form.
